One of the most exciting developments in optics over the course of the past few years is undoubtedly the development of myopia control lenses.

A myopic or short sighted person has difficulty seeing clearly far away but can see well close up. It is most commonly the result of the eyeball growing too long in childhood. This is important because myopic progression significantly increases the risk of eye problems such as myopic macular degeneration, retinal detachment, cataracts and glaucoma in later life.

Risk factors for myopic progression include having a myopic parent or parents, or showing signs of even very low myopia at an early age. When detected early myopia control lenses have been shown to significantly slow myopic progression in children thus reducing the risk of the aforementioned sight threatening conditions.

At Castletroy Park Opticians we supply Essilor’s Stellest myopia control lenses for glasses and Coopervision’s Misight myopia control contact lenses.
